HOW TO SOLVE A&R QUESTIONS? FOR NEET EXAM
The dreamland of every medical aspirant.
A&R type questions have become deciding factors for getting through NEET-PMT or rather we should say 'Assertion-Reason’ word has become synonyms with NEET-PMT.
What Does An 'Assertion-Reason' Type Question Mean?
Assertion-Reason type question is just another way of checking the clarity of your concepts. In these questions, firstly a statement is given under the heading 'Assertion' & then below this another statement is given under the heading 'Reason'. First of all, you have to check whether the statement given under 'Reason' is correct or not. If yes, you have to check whether this statement is a correct explanation of what is asserted above. On the basis of this, you have to mark the choice.
Just Look at Here :
Assertion (A): Mitosis maintains the genetic similarity of somatic cells.
Reason (R): Chromosomes do not undergo crossing over.
The options will be :
(a) If both A and R are true & R is a correct explanation of A.
(b) If both A and R are true but R is not a correct explanation of A.
(c) If A is true but R is false.
(d) The option d can be either 'A is false but R is true' or 'both A & R are false'.
Now, in this question, as both A&R are a true statement and also R is a correct explanation of A, therefore our answer to this question would be (a) This is all that an AR type questions mean.
Assertion (A): Calcium carbide on hydrolysis give methane.
Reason (R): Calcium carbide contains C4- anions.
Answer: - D
Assertion(A): A person working on a horizontal road with a load on his head does not work.
Reason(R): No work is said to be done. If directions of force and displacement of load are perpendicular to each other.
Answer: - A
Assertion and Reason (A&R) questions are those questions that combine elements of multiple choice and True/false question types and allow you to test more complicated issues and require a higher level of learning. Such question consists of two statements, an assertion and a reason. The student must determine first that the statements given as assertion and reason are true or false and if true whether the second one can explain the occurrence of the fact given in first.
Is Doing Them Impossible?
Definitely not. every year the students entering into NEET must be doing many of them correctly. You might be thinking that these students must be extraordinarily intelligent and bookworms. No, this is not the case. This is their hard work, regularity & the belief 'I can' & 'I will' which make them through the exam. Nothing is impossible in this world. A&R type question is not an exception. You can call them 'Different', sometimes 'Difficult' but never 'Impossible'.
For The Preparation Of A&R Type Questions, Do We Have Study High-level Topics (Out Of Syllabus) Or High-level Books?
No, certainly not. Only the quality of study differs and not the quantity or the study material itself. First of all, we would like to make to you clear one point that for preparing anything you must be determined about the institute (i.e. your aim) for which you are preparing, otherwise your preparation is just a wastage of time & energy. So, for the preparation of A&R type questions, first of all you must include NEET in your target exam list even if you are an average student and start saying to yourself 'I can' & 'I will' because 'those 1200' for the coming year have to come from amongst you. Now after including NEET in your target exam list, let's move on to how to prepare for it.
Firstly, make NCERTs as your BASE BOOKS. Now choose only one book, other than NCERTs, for each subject as your TEXT BOOKS. Label all other books with you as REFERENCE BOOKS. Let's assume, we have to do some new topic . Firstly, revise the previous linked topic. After this, think about the topic which you have to study now. Generate some curiosity about that topic in you and then pick up NCERT and read that topic without caring whether you are able to understand it or not. Now move on to the text book. Start reading that topic slowly, steadily, understanding each & every word, line, paragraph, subtopic & ultimately the whole topic (nothing down & clearing the doubts arising is between). You will find that you have developed a hazy picture of that topic in your mind. Now, read it again within a short period of 2-3 days.
This time do one thing, go on circling every 'because', 'therefore' & 'since' in the chapter. Read the statement before 'because'. Take it as assertion & the statement after because as its reason.
DO NOT TRY TO REMEMBER/LEARN ASSERTION OR REASON OR BOTH OF THEM WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THEM. COMPLETELY REMOVE 'ANY' CONFUSION ABOUT 'ANY THING' IN YOUR MIND. This is very essential. Every time you would read the chapter, every time you would find new 'therefore', 'because' or 'since' or more question arising in your mind. So, the chapter must be 'read' as many times as possible because they are going to form the root of most of the questions. Here, the word reading does not mean only reading. Notebook & pen must be with you while reading. It must be done with concentration. Try to understand & reason-out each & every word. After every reading, solve some questions on that topic.
During the last 15 days of your NEET-exam preparation, practice A&R type questions as much as possible. One thing is sure that reading the chapter once or twice & then only solving the questions based on it is not going to help. It is the quality part of studies which will clear your concepts, make the topic common sense for you and will help you in solving MCQs & will automatically prepare you for A&R type questions.
After Complete Preparation, How To Solve An A&R Type Question ?
This basic & foremost thing to solve an A&R type question is to have COMPLETE knowledge about that topic. Here, COMPLETE word is very important because partial knowledge may be proved dangerous.
In flow chart you must have noticed that i have asked at various places 'Are you sure' or Is knowledge 'complete' about that topic - 'Yes' answer to such questions and that too correct can only be achieved by quality study.
Also while doing A&R type question, when you are reading the 'Assertion' hide the 'Reason' given by your hand. First think of the reason of your own and then see the reason given.
In these type of questions,
